I would suggest changing the oil in the transmission and checking the magnet on the drain plug for large bits of debris. or it may be really low on oil.
Jack up the left front and remove the wheel. (make sure the car is supported safely with a jack stand of course). The drain plug is at the lowest point on the trans, you will need a 6mm hex key. The drain plug is difficult to get at, there is only about 1 1/2" between it and the frame. See if there are any large pieces that come out. Replace the drain plug and refill the trans. The fill plug is about 1/2 the way up the trans. you can reach it through the opening in the wheel well behind the strut.
fill with the proper lubricant. I'm not sure if the 97 uses 10W-30 or synthetic. I used Castrol Syntec 75W-90 gear lube in my '95 with no problems. It is kind of a pain to fill without a pump. Gear lube pumps are available at most auto parts stores.
