Sorry for the delay in my reply- I went live at my company with Exchange 5.5/Outlook 2000 for 220 users shortly after my original post and there went the spare time... no major problems, just very busy.
If I am going to spend my own money (rather than wait for the insurance company), the passenger side hub/wheel bearing assembly sounds like a good bet. If my noise goes away I'm sure I will be able to collect from my insurance company. The Saab dealer said the hub job would run around $400 per side... sound in the ballpark or too high? They tested for play with the "pry bar test" I am told, and found no problems. There is no pulsation when braking. The front rotors and pads were replaced several months before the accident (just fyi). I had my new front wheels/tires rotated to the back and the noise has not changed. I do notice that it is not as pronounced in the very hot weather (85-90 F).
What else rotates up front when coasting with the engine off, clutch in, trans in neutral? Inner and outer CV joints, anything else, perhaps steering components? As I said, the driver's side wheel/fender was bumped by the other car but the passenger side wheel took the major damage with the curb, so I would think it's a safe bet that any noise is coming from parts on the passenger side (but who knows when it comes to accident damage). If I know all of the parts involved, I may just have them replaced in a logical order until the noise is gone (starting w/pass side then moving to driver's side). Of course after spending the money I will find out that it was a vibrating mud flap after all! I still wish I could find a way to do a wheel/tire swap with another car. I had a P4000 develop a thumping sound at 20,000 miles and I keep wondering if one of my new P6000's has some defect from new. I certainly don't want to drive with the temp spare for several days at each position on the car to test for tire noise. My Saab service manager has always seemed honest with me, but he kept bs'ing me whenever I asked about setting up a swap (even offered to pay any costs). First he said the NG900 was 4 lug and the 9-3 was 5 lug so the wheels wouldn't work (!). I pointed out that error and then he said his only 9-3 loaner had 15,000 on it so the MXV4's wouldn't be a good test (could introduce other noises). He also said the wheels on his two other 9-5 loaners aren't the same pattern (to my knowledge, also bs).
