Dean, when I posted this before you suggested the Wynns and yes I did use it with no apparent differance in oil consumption. I have looked for Chevron's Techron but it doesn't appear to be available in this area (I'll pick up some bottles on our trip next month from Ottawa to St Louis via Thunder Bay in the 1987 convertible). The synthetic I use is CTC's own. I will probably take the car to the indie who works on the 1987 as he is a reasonable guy and would probably do the compression test while I wait. However, with a loss of compression shouldn't I have noticed a mileage drop, I haven't. I record every fill and put it into a spread sheet and month to month the mpg variance is minor (May '00 (about the time I started adding oil) = 36.9 vs May '01 = 37.1, Aug '00 = 39.6 vs Aug '01 = 37.8). I am obviously hoping for an easy fix but that may not be in the cards and I'll just keep a spare litre in the trunk!
