To attach the "new" nut to the strut tube, I used an adjustable pipe wrench (the kind that work like pliers but with 4-5 possable sizes). I got a really big one, the handles were about 12-14 inches. I just clamped the strut into my vice. Position the strut so that the knuckle part is jambed against something solid, like the table, so that it doesn't move when tightening. Then just grab hold of the nut with the BIG pliers and tighten away. I used my very accurate muscle control to determine the correct torque. READ: I tightened the damn thing until it wouldn't move any more, then I jerked on the nut a little more. So far everything is still tight!
As for removing the ball joint, I have heard of that technique from people that work with VWs a lot. Me, I just went to the parts store spent $5 on a ball joint seperator (the larger size, I think?) and beat it into place with a 20 oz hammer (this is one of the few instances where using a bigger hammer, might have actually made things go better). It was very easy and I didn't hurt the ball joint boots one bit!
I must have missed the part about removing the brake shields in the Haynes manual. I did remove all of the brake parts, caliper, rotor, caliper mounting bracket (I think). You could probably keep the bracket and rotor on, it just makes things heavier to lift. But I definitely kept the baking plate on.
