I feel for ya. I have a '95 SET and earlier this year posted volumes of complaints about my car doing the same thing. All the vaccum lines were replaced as well as the IAC. All other sensors, etc. checked out fine, which didn't surprise me as this is an intermittant problem. Like you posted, pinching off the tube to the IAC brought the idle right down, which indicates that the problem is electrical, ie. a bad connection, or a bad ECU command. My problem went away for 3-4 months and I thought that it had just worked it's way out somehow. Being and engineer I didn't really believe that, but hope springs eternal! Alas, a week ago just before I took the car in to have the a/c compressor replaced, it started acting up again. This time though, the high idle on start up wasn't constant, but fluctuated between ~2300 and ~1000 for about 30 sec, then settled down at ~1500. The same symptoms with the upshift light staying on when I release the throttle in gears 1-4 also were present.

Putting the ISAT on the car while it's acting up would probably go a long way in tracking this gremlin down, but since the dealer won't let me drive around with one hooked up, I think I'm out of luck.

i am surprised to hear that you're having very similar symptoms to mine, but with the n/a engine. I wonder what electronics are common between the two cars.

What part of the country are you in? I'm in central PA.
