"First, the filter is pretty hard to get to. I feel that removing all those plastic components too often cannot be good for their durability."

You have to make the same effort to replace a filter as washing it, so stop whining about that. If you are worried about the durability of your vehicle, never change the filter and don't drive it.

"Second, it is pretty hard to wash the filter."

Looks like everything is too much work for you.

"the results is a filter that is not completely clean and is pretty torn up. No holes, just a lot of threads pulled out of where they belong. I don't think the washed filter will filter out dust and pollen as well as a new replacement."

Appearance does not equal performance. If you want a snow white filter, spend your money. I have posted many times to be gentle with the polypropelene blanket element to not tease it up. It will not be snow white and you should not worry about bits of stuff that don't come out. These will not affect the filtering and will not pass throught the filter. So don't be picking at those bits and pulling filaments out of the blanket element! Please note that your new filter will not be snow white, and will have bits of stuff stuck in it within a couple of weeks. So whats the point? And, don't put it in the dishwasher. Who posted that! Probably some silly humour that you should not have taken seriously.

I got over 5 years of service out my OEM cabin air fitler. Then I got an aftermarket unit with a synthetic paper type element. That is a one shot deal that will become quite resistive as it gets dirty. I am about to install my second and probably last OEM filter. As long as the element has to be pulled, I am prepared to save over $30 US for 5 minutes of my time and a squirt or two of cleaner.

Information about options is just that. It gives you a choice. If you do not choose to do something your self, then at least you are then choosing an option where you had none before.

Do not get a K&N filter. After you clean it, and even after oiling it, you will see one end is darker than the other. However will you sleep at night with that knowledge? How can the air be clean if the filter is discolored! Damm! you will have to wash it too! You know my K&N even has bits of insect legs stuck in it after it is reconditioned!

I cleaned a Volvo engine block in the dishwasher while doing a complete rebuild. And baked it dry in the oven. I did not ask my wife's permission.

And yes, you can wash your cables, distributor cap and rotor in hot water with lots of soap, and bake them dry if you have such an ignition system. Or you can throw them out when they get dirty. It is your choice. It is only money! Just because you would not want to pay a tech to wash them for you at $60/Hr, does not mean that you should not do it your self.

And as for penny pinching. There are plenty of uses for the money that self reliant folks save while reconditioning instead of replacing, and by doing work themselve that costs $60 and hour or more at the dealer. And for many there is great satifaction in doing this work themselves. Also, you become experienced and knowledgeable about your vehicle and its systems. Should everyone do this... hell no! There are risks, especially if you cannot do competent work. For many enthusiasts, doing the work them selves allows for the use of performance grade parts while avoiding many labor charges for intalls and repairs. They spend less money than the folks who have the dealers do everything with stock parts. I also know from experience, and many others will concur, that in doing their penny pinching DIY work they do notice the condition of other items and not deterioration, corrosion and other things that need attention. Many of these things will not be reported by a dealer. They will wait and see if such things fail and they will happily provide a professional repair after your vehicle arrives by tow truck.

So if these are things that are not for you, thats fine. Those who are enthusiasts at that level will continue to exchange information on this BB.

And you too have had a learning experience. Now you understand your own preferrences.
