Well, I have 130000 miles on my original front rotors and pads. I have 40% of the original pad friction material thickness. The rotors have a perfect friction wear surface condtion. There is a visible amount of iron wear. These are prefectly serviceable. Some have fully worn out their pads in 20000 miles. So there are no hard and fast rules. The differences in folks' service requirements (city vs expressway commute) and personal driving styles accounts for these differences.
(I am about to replace all rotors and pads for a mid life renewal. And replacing both rear calipers, as one has a stuck piston.)
