There have been several instances reported over the last year or so of a timing chain failure. Actually, it seemed to be more a failure of the tensioner leading to the chain running off the cogs - affecting timing of valves and/or some damage to cogs. Regrettably, you can not readily check for the problem - you have to remove at least the timing chain cover & you may have to remove the engine to make any needed replacements. It happened to me just a year ago and SAAB picked up a large part of the tab for repairs - hope you have a good relationship with a SAAB dealer & the service dept. In my case, the evidence pointed to the chain tensioner sticking & therefore not maintaining tension on the chain. By the way, there are two chains - one for the camshafts and the other for the balance shafts.
