Since I posted a question, I feel like I should return with some answers ;)
Cross-drilling rotors actually stared back in the 70s racing scene. It was done originally to reduce unsprung weight on LeMans cars. Porsche did this on all of their factory racecars.
As someone else mentioned, cross-drilled rotors are prone to cracking and warping. This is VERY true. That is why you should never buy cross-drilled rotors. Brembo and Zimmerman are both OEM for Porsche and others. All of "cross-drilled rotors from these two companies(zimm. and brembo) are actually "hole-cast" and not drilled. When the holes are cast into the rotor, and not drilled, none of the cracking/warping problems occur.
Second, racecar teams noticed that the brakes last longer under racing conditions, are less prone to fade, and had much greater stopping power in the wet.
Form personal experience, I run my trackcar with zimmerman holed rotors, and have ever had any problems. Since the holes are cast in, I don't expect any problems either. I have gone through several sets of rotors this way.
As far as putting these rotors on a street car, I wouldn't bother, unless you attend DE events on occasion. You will not see much of the benefits of the reduced weight/better cooling if you only drive on streets.
Regards,
Dave
