The BRAND of gas has less to do with it than the tanks at that particular stations. Saying to "stay away from Texaco" is rediculous. It's more like stay away from the (fictitious) Texaco station at 123 Main St in Pocono, PA.
People in the know will tell you that a lot of cheap gas is the same, since they get it from the same refineries and distributors. The only difference between that and the "good stuff" is maybe some minute additives.
Since the government mandated replacing ALL gas station tanks a couple years ago with new less leak-proof versions, I think the chances of getting "bad gas" is less and less. There is still the thinking that you shouldn't buy gas just after the tanks have been refilled by the tanker (which stirs up any sediment on the bottom) but it's tough to know when THEY had their last fillup.
