I agree with xq, it sure sounds like something tried to leave the block rather than getting hit by something, especially if you say a rod is dangling around. I'm not sure which end is dangling, if it's the small end, then detonation probably fractured a piston, if it's the big end then oil starvation killed the crank-end bearing. Parts usually only try to leave the engine during high-load, high-rpm conditions, like in racing.
I have no idea whether insurance will cover it or not. Maybe this shop of yours can swap in a 2.3T from a 9000, sort of a DIY Viggen.
