...they should not be the same part number. I suppose that must be an error. Saab has no TSB (that I know of) that recommends the replacement of an 89C with an 82C, so one would think that the parts would have different part numbers.
I'm sure there are as good reasons to stick with the 89 as there are to switch to the 82. There is probably no definitive answer. You are wise in replacing the T-Stat, however. One cannot expect these to last any longer than 30k miles. Many will, but why take the chance? Even if they don't stick, the opening temperature will change as the wax ball leaks over long periods of time.
Not sure if you've done the install yet, but Saab recommends carefully cleaning the seating surfaces and lubricating the rubber gasket with non-acidic vaseline. Getting leaks from the T-Stat housing after replacement is not unusual.
