Garrett, they CAN be. Needless to say, proper and continuous maintenance will save you much in the long run. From what I've learned, the NGs ('94-'97) can have some problems that Saab ultimately took care of in later models. The 100,000 mile mark is where many problems develop, even ones that aren't taken care of with proper maintenance (clutches, a/c, electrical). You can find just as many owners who have virtually nothing go wrong with their vehicles. I'd wager you can find many who do. My '95se (v-6) has forced me to dip into my 401k in order to pay for repairs that were NOT a result of improper maintenance.
Just remember, for a car that delivers top performance, you also have to expect to pay for that performance at some point. Just stay on top of things and have it checked out -- bumper to bumper -- before you buy.
