Actually, if I recall correctly, there were problems in the early 90's with techs overtightening the drain plug and cracking the oil pan. Saab's solution was to make the head smaller so that the head stripped before it cracked.
I've had two go bad on my 94 900--jiffy lube. $3 is better than $300, IMHO.
Perhaps interestingly, the drain plug head on my 72 Model 96 stripped, and the replacement from Saab was the new style with the small head--apparently the part carried over through all the model designs. There were several parts that were identical in OG 900's and 96's--coupe rear window latches stick out in my head as one example.
