The top idler pulley is a mess! I got a good look at this morning (skipped classes!) and it is now clear what has occured. Luckily I first smelled the burning plastic about 100ft from my driveway, and the whinning sound did not occur until after I had gently rolled tha car (engine off), into my driveway. I guess I got lucky in that it is sitting in my driveway, not on I-95!

Just a few questions,
Should I replace all the pulleys now, or just the failed idlers?
Also, is there a redesigned pulley that doesn't fail?
and finally... Is the Serp Belt replacement a DIY or does it require some VAG tools or some special expertise. What should I expect for a charge on that replacement? Is it a dealer only fix?
