On pulsed injections systems the O2 sensor functions as ONE of the major inputs to determine air/fuel mixture. However, the FI computer also takes input from the coolant temp sensor, throttle position sensor, and most noteworthy...the air flow meter to help determine mixture. However, if one of these items is not sending correct signals then, yes, fuel/air mixture will be off.
The O2 sensor sends a cyclical pulse at varying rates causing the FI system to cycle rich/lean, rich/lean just enough so that the engine can run leaner, but not enough that it runs poorly. It decides the rate and amount of this cycle by reading the amount of unburned O2 in the exhaust, indicating inefficient burning of fuel.
Bosch recommends replacing the sensor every 30-40K for optimal function. I replaced mine in my 9000CD turbo at 100K and saw a huge increase in gas mileage and smoother idle.
If you are really interested in the function of Bosch FI systems, get a book called "Bosch FI and Engine Management" by Charles Probst avail. at B&N or Amazon. Good chapters on theory, a little backdated, but good info nonetheless.
Hope this helps.
Nick.
