This sounds mostly like a pain in the ass repair, and not so much rocket science. From the sound of this haynes manual procedure, you don't have to lower the gas tank to remove the fuel filter line. I may be misinterpreting this procedure though. Here's the procedure for removing the tank, in case I have.
--(drain fuel first--- might want to invest in a cheap hand pump with rubber hose at the auto parts store)
1) Take off the neg batt. cable (to eliminate chance for sparks, shorts, etc)
2) Chock front wheels.--- (put either in first gear or park) Raise rear and put on jack stands.
3) Loosen clips and disconnect the filler neck from tank. Disconnect breather hose.
4) take off gas filter securing screw. Detach fuel filter from side of tank. (**This doesn't sound like the fuel filter I'm used to on my 94 900--- the haynes is for english vehicles--- maybe they're different. At this point, maybe all you have to do is this step-- and remove the line to the filter. You be da judge)
5)With a trolley jack, lift the tank slightly (put a wood buffer between the jack and tank)
6)Remove the straps holding the tank up by taking the nuts off and unhooking the ends of the straps- as they become slack- from their brackets.
7)Lower the jack just enough to get access to the top of the tank. (Do NOT fully lower)
8)Carefully release all fuel lines from their retaining clips on top/sides of tank.
9) Unplug the 2 wiring connectors from the top of fuel pump.
10) Label the return and supply hoses, then disconnect them from the top of the pump. Do this by depressing the locking tabs at the sides of each quick release union. (Gas will leak out-- be careful)
11) Disconnect any remaining breather hoses that may hinder removal of tank. (Remember where they go)
12) Lower and remove tank, with help from your drunken, indolent neighbor if necessary. Give him another beer, if it helps.
Refitting is the reverse of removal, and begins with sobering your neighbor up, getting him a job, and out of your hair.
Best of luck... this sounds like about a 2 hour adventure. Let us know how you make out.
