Removing the alternator is a pain in the butt.
As you read it elsewhere by now you have to do the following:
- Remove the airbox
- Remove the tension on the belt by putting a breaker bar in the 1/2 square and pulling (hard). Use a 6mm bit to lock it in place
- Jack the car, remove the right frontwheel
- Remove the plastic piece behind the wheel
- Remove the belt
- Remove the upper idler pulley
- Relieve the tension on the tensioner arm, using your breaker bar, get your 6mm bit back
- Remove the tensioner arm (8mm allen bolt)
- Now you have access to the lower and upper alternator bolt. Get them out (8mm allen again).
- Get a small mallet and knock the alternator out.
In my case I just needed to go at the regulator so I turned the alternator around, moved it up somewhere accessible and removed its back cover. If you need to actually get the damn thing out of the car I guess you will have to remove a bunch of other stuff. DRW was able to get the alternator out from the top, but I don't know how he did it. I've tried (had to remove the upper alternator holder).
