The spark does erode the metal a bit. How much I don't know. I has 220000 km on a volvo cap when it met its maker when the body shop caught fire when in for a restoration. I was having the work done carefuly, paying for time and material so that they would find and fix all problems, not just return the vehicle with nice paint and hidden problems. :(
So I guess I don't know how to answer the rotor cap 'wear' issue. I found in Candian winters with salt and dirt, that it was important to keep the high voltage stuff clean.
Cleaning things up is inexpensive, justs costs some time to do it. So worth a try. If you suspect that the rotor internal gaps are an issue, you can get new stuff in the future and see if there are any improvements.
As the rotor gets 4x's the wear of the cap, the rotor could be changed out before the cap. Don't let the roughness of the inside contact and rotor be a concern. The electrons don't care about the surface finish.
On the internal cap pins, you can probably see some of the machined flats above or below the spark track and can judge any material dimensional changes.
There may be an internal condensation shield below the rotor which can be removed and cleaned.
It is always interesting to get comments from the wife when you are baking car parts!
