Yes cats run hot and must be over 1000-1200 deg F to do that Palladium catalysis thing that they do....however...there are some ceramic filaments within them which can be damaged if they get TOO hot...(ie where the loose stuff inside a rattleing one comes from). A mixture problem which causes too rich a fuel/air mixture can cause them to overheat and be damaged.
Maybe a bad O2 sensor causing a rich mixture? Thats one idea. The sensor signal (when working properly) should rapidly cycle rich/lean...rich/lean. They can stick on rich and therefore the mixture problem.
Its a start.
