perhaps I should have been more specific. There is no way a person standing under the car can tell if a cat has been running too hot, except perhaps if there were scorch marks around the cat. It's normal op. temp will feel super hot to the "touch" (but don't!).
The only easy way to diagnose cat. failure is if it's rattling. Otherwise, take it to a good shop that can put it on a scope and take a look at O2 sensor outputs.
My Saab dealer has a hard enough time working on the car, there is no way I'd trust the expertise of a chain repair shop. FWIW, my extended warranty company wanted AAMCO to work on my trans. No f-ing way!
