Found a way to keep the presets when taking off the clamps. Drill a small hole about 1/8 to 3/16" deep directly in the center of the bat post. Screw a small self tapping screw into it. Take a thin flexible (16 ga ought to do it) wire, with an an appropriate sized alligator clamp on one end, and stripped wire on the other. Wrap or solder the stripped end to the screw. Clamp the alligator clip to some part of the cable clamp. When you remove the cable, you should be able to thread the wire through the center of it , and with the alligator clamp still on, you still have juice to the radio.
It's a bit cumbersome, but with care, it works great. I even cleaned and coated everything with corrosion paste, and the wire held nicely.
