The internal trunk release located in the drivers door will function even if all the doors are closed, but I have never experimented to see if it will still function will the ignition key taken out etc....
Anyway to your problem, I recall a post on this BB about 2 months ago along the lines of if you have a spoiler on your trunk lid, this adds additional weight to the trunk, and the catch re-locks its self.
I dont have a spoiler , so i cant verify this, but then again, I dont have a problem with the release !!
The remote unlock should work OK if you are out of the vehicle and pulling up on the trunk lid after it has been released.
