interior temperature sensor fan - needed or not?

Just bought a '95 900 SE CVT with 109K...so I expect this to be the first of many posts....
I have a very noisy electric motor fan running behind the console - it is behind the what the manual calls the interior temperature sensor. The odd thing is it runs even when ACC is turned off, even for a period of time after I turn the key off totally. I think eventually it stops, but I was worried about a dead battery, so I just pulled the clip off the back of it. The ACC still seems to work OK, although I can a "1" when doing the auto reset for the ACC. A search on other posts reveal a similar problem, and it is suggested it be cleaned and lubricated. However, I'm not sure that will keep it from continuing to run after the key is removed. Does anyone know...is this normal for the fan associated with the interior temp sensor to run without the ACC on and/or after the key is removed? And do I really need to have this fan connected to have my ACC work properly? Could I connect it but disable the fan part?
Any and all advice would be appreciated.... - Jay Young
