Perhaps someone added an non compatable coolant to top it off once.

With green fluid that was 3.3 years old, when I drained it it was clear and there was no sludge and no signs of anything when I flushed the system and pulled out fluid from the block, rad and heater core using the shop vac. The inside of the head as seen through fittings and thermostat cavity etc, and the inside of the block at the water pump, looked very clean, bright and free of corrosion, rust or scale. I was really impressed.

So what you saw is not the norm.

I am now running Saab's blue coolant, $8.00/gal at US dealers. I will be fitting a new lower hose, replacing hose clamps, thermostat and the heater hoses when it is a nice driveway mechanic day. Might try to clean the reservoir bottle too.

What I did have was a waxy build up on the inside of the reservoir bottle. And a hard tough plastic like deposit where the factory hose clamps allowed some seapage at clamped joints. The factory clamps are a not good with small diameter hoses. I suggest replacing all with SS gear clamps. Note that new production uses wire spring clamps.
