Hi all -
I am looking for ACCURATE AND RELIABLE information regarding the disabling of the shift-up light on the '98 Saab 900S Convertable. I've read various things on the Internet regarding this ranging from the extremely sarcastic "Just shift when the engine cuts out at redline" to the equally elegant "Cover the light with electrical tape". Well, electrical tape worked fine for my 87 Chevy, but I'm not going to do that to my Saab. And as far as just ignoring it, half my commute every day is in hilly residential areas with speeds ranging between 30-35 mph and the light is pretty much continually on. If I try to follow it's advice the engine diesels so bad that I can't hear the radio over the vibration. And yes, I have owned the car for almost a year now and I can guarantte you I'm not going to get used to it.
I'm looking for information from someone who HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS AND NOT JUST SPECULATING WILDLY. Does it take someone with a Tech II, and if so, EXACTLY WHAT MODIFICATION DO YOU MAKE? Is it a jumper or a fuse, and if so, WHICH ONE IS IT FOR A '98 (hearing about the fuse for a '79 DOES ME NO GOOD AT ALL)?
Sorry if I seem a little agravated with this, but my frustration is only being compounded by the totally useless and/or incomplete information I am seeing on the net, hearing at shops, etc. regarding this. And there is nothing more irritating than driving a car that you're really proud of only to have this blaringly annoying light on the dashboard that does absolutly nothing but distract your eyes from the road.
I may be making more about this than most, but I spent a lot of time researching various cars (BMW, Mercedies, Saab, etc.) before I decided on a Saab Convertalbe. If however I knew how annoying this would be I probably would have made it part of my selection criteria and very likely would be driving something different. I'm hoping that at least one person reading this will be able to help me feel better about my decision to purchase an otherwise ideal vehicle.
Thanks.
