Bruce -
Thanks for the great info. This was exactly the type of information that I have been looking for but until now had been utterly unsuccessfull in finding.
And to all who read my original post and thought to themselves, "Man, that guy needs to chill out a bit", I agree. I wrote that 1) late at night when I should have been going to bed, 2) after a long day at work, 3) after being told that afternoon by a well respected independent Saab shop that they didn't know how to do this, and 4) after searching the net for about an hour and finding only advice that I'd classify in the 'rumors and speculation' category. My apologies to anyone who was annoyed at my venting of frustration.
It's not so much that I feel skittish about disconnecting a wire, but more to your point that what I am concerned about is that I'm getting the right wire, and furthermore that this wire doesn't serve some other purpose that will impact the performance and/or functionality of the vehicle. You're discussion regarding pin #55 was exactly what I needed to hear. However, I understand that if I do this it's at my own risk and won't hold you or anyone else responsible.
At this point I think my course of action will be to get to the ECU and take a look at how I can a) get to and safely disconnect pin #55, and b) reconnect it if things don't go right.
If that doesn't look primising, I'll fail back to my original plan which was to go into the dash, but as you state, that's a lot of work. Plus, I had no assurance that I wouldn't get in there only to find that the instrument mechanism is a bunch of LEDs on a circuit board and not just a light I could unplug.
I'll post a follow up hopefully this weekend with how things went, what I learned, etc. Thanks again.
