There was a post a while ago where it concern was raised about the condition of the stut mount rubber and how the top of the strut shaft moved about in the rubber when the steering wheel was worked back and forth while the vehicle was stationary and the hood up so one can see whats going on from the drivers seat.
I had observed lots of motion with my old tired mounts. While doing the oil change this weekend, I worked the steering and the top of the strut shaft in the mount hardly moved at all! So that explains very clearly the improvement in steering dynamics.
We also now have a very definitive diagnostic method to determine the end of usedul service life of the upper strut mounts! Very easy to do and much more specific than seeing if there are any visible signs of damage to the rubber.
Iron wear particles from cam shafts, timing chains, cylinder walls, oil pumps, cylinder walls are mostly very small and are not captured by the oil filter. These bits are damaging to oil pumps, cam lobes and soft babbit bearings. These can be removed by a bypass filter, or magnetically removed. There are inexpensive magnetic drain bolts availalbe, but overkill is always interesting.
I also confirmed that the stainless steel oil sump drain bolt that I got for the '97TDI diesel Passat fits the 95SET. I will get one of these for the next Saab oil change, the TDI gets it first. It has a rare earth magnet, quite large and very strong, that is extended into the sump. So I will not have any results to post till two oil changes from now. The drain bolt is almost $27US plus shipping.
I also am trying Mobil's Delvac 1 5W40 which is a very good fully synthetic diesel engine oil. It is stated to be very good for gasoline engines, but they make no effort to cross market it. The engine seems quieter with this. I will be watching to see how the mpg's are affected. So I will have a single oil for both vehicles, if I like how it works out.
