The "Dean upper strut bearing test"

('94 SE)At 100k, and since my steering was beginning display the vagueness of a large Buick, I thought I would check the upper strut mounts per Dean's recent post. The rubber is intact with no cracks, the car has never made any "popping" sounds coming from the front suspension, but, sure enough, as I turned the steering wheel the top of both struts seemed to wallow around in their mounts. Guess they are about shot.
I can get the upper strut mounts and bearings (OEM) for 200.00 or I can get the KYB versions for 92.00. Now, if the OEM units were only good for lets say 75k (yes, I noticed this some time ago), what service/performance could one expect from the "less substantial" (as I have heard in recent posts) KYBs? What do you guys recommend?
Also, while I am at it I have choices of strut cartridges - KYB, Boge, Bilstein, Koni. From my past experience with Saabs, Konis, even the old single tube models seemed to be the best for OG Saabs, but of course, are the costliest. I am inclined to go with the Konis, any feedback from owners who had tried these or the others I reference? This is not a race car
The front end shop I use is a Tire Rack suspension installer and will install all the parts for me at what I think is a reasonable cost (75.00 - 100.00), and will check alignment when complete. I can't wait too long, I just had them install 4 Dunlop SP 9000's this morning, which by the way, are awesome rain tires, with a superb ride - and I don't want to screw the tires up with a sloppy front end.
Thanks.
