Charging & electrical grounding problems (somewhat)

Hi all,

The other day, while exiting an automated carwash, all the warning lights came on and the CID chime sounded repeatedly (and irregularly) for about 30 seconds. After that, the battery and the oil warning light stayed on but the car ran fine all along, everything else returning to normal, except that the oil and battery lghts were on and the dash lighting was dimmer.

Being a bonehead, I kept driving the car for the next two days (with frequent shutdown and starts - without any problems) until finally the battery ran dry and I was left stranded. Note that the oil and battery light were always lit when the car was running.

Figuring that the alternator was dead, I changed it, and the car ran fine (no warning, no lights everything back to normal) for about 1 km, when the aforementioned problems came back with a vengence.

Question is: is the second alternator bad, or is there a grounding problem somewhere in the charging system? I personaly think it is a grounding problem, but giving my not-so-brilliant track record, I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.
