1) Oil changes were per Saab spec (owner's man.) until I came to my senses. About every 7.5k until B.S. tensioner failure; since then every 3k plus/minus .5k. The Master Tech that works on the car has been ok with this schedule.

2) Again per Saab spec. dino oil used up to failure. Have considered switching to synth but have some concerns re: exisiting wear and tear on engine. Again, Master Tech says at this point it really doesn't make a difference. He suggests I stay with dino. I've always spec'd Castrol GTX, either 5-30 or 10-40.

3)Oil pump intake screen was clogged but not plugged. This could very well have been detritus from the sprockets. The tensioners themselves exhibited wear (@ 93k what doesn't show wear?) but were not in need of replacement. Naturally, with the B.S. drive train exposed all parts (bearings, chain, sprockets, & tensioners) were replaced. Cam shafts looked fine when V.C. gasket & head gasket were changed at 89k (VERY MINOR oil leak from head gasket - no coolant to oil leakage).

4) To my knowledge, 2.3 was the first Saab engine to be counter-balanced and went into service in '93-'94 (?) first in 9K and later in the 900. Both config's were originally N/A with higher compression ratios to give the low end versions of both classes more "kick". I've never had a sludge problem with GTX that I've been aware of, and the tech has never mentioned it. John and I almost always have direct conversations before, during, and after repairs, so we've built up some rappor. He knows I'm not a complete yahoo and I trust his judgement and skill.
