If the bolt wasn't there now I could sneeze and the existing bushing would fall out, its all wadded up and torn. If this happens to my car at 100k in an area with great roads and warm weather, everyone should take a peek at their bushings. Imagine what a Saab in Pittsburgh or upstate NY goes through.
I (and fellow posters on this BB, I am sure) would like to know the step by step DIY instructions and what antics are needed to r&r the bushing. Are there aftermarket bushings fabricated of a more durable substance (poly, etc.)on the market? Or do we just put the same crap back in that deteriorates after some 50k?
I need to do this ASAP, so I dont ruin those new tires. The procedure in Haynes (10.5 subsection 4) identifies a press is needed to install the bushing. In addition I think I will have the arms (cast aluminum) dye penetrant tested near the bosses at each end, as there appears to be a crack in the casting near the boss on one of them. I hope I am wrong on this but it does not look good.
Since the Haynes manual sometimes is a bit skimpy in the details...anything you can add from your experience is valuable to all of us, especially how you pressed in the bushing. I think I would put the bushing in the freezer overnight (causes it to contract), with the arm at room temp merely drop the bushing into place or use a big socket to install with a big vise if more oomph is needed...
