5 speed reverse problem - follow up (detailed)

In a previous post I described how my ’94 v6 5 speed (132k miles) refused to shift into reverse. A number of responses suggested problems with the linkage or, in the worst case, an internal problem in the transmission.
Mechanic disconnected linkage and determined that problem is in transmission, and not something that he would want to work on; he speculates that the problem is with the reverse shifter fork and demonstrated how to get it into reverse with a little gear grinding.
With a little experimentation I determined the following method for engaging reverse WITHOUT overt gear grinding: (1) with clutch fully depressed, pull up on reverse lock ring and move shift lever into back right corner as close as possible to reverse; (2) slowly let up on clutch pedal until there is a slight ringing/ buzzing sound; (3) fully depress clutch once again; (4) wait till ringing/buzzing sound stops; (5) gently push shift lever into reverse.
Once in reverse, it operates normally and never pops-out. All other gears work normally.
So here are the questions:
What’s causing the buzzing/ringing sound?
Could this problem have been caused by attempting to shift into reverse while moving forward at, say 30 mph.? I’m thinking that the shift fork may have been “bent”, reducing the range of motion.
Is the procedure above likely to work over the long term, or do the symptoms foretell degradation that will end in complete failure of the transmission?
Thanks
Kevin S
