Sounds like you are describing what's called "double clutching". This procedure is used to engage a gear which has no synchro, or a poor one.
Your second clutching in the gate for reverse brings the reverse gear up to speed with the input shaft gear so that they will engage each other, which is normally the synchro's job. Your problem may be with the reverse synchro being worn, not sure if reverse and fifth gear share the same shift fork and synchro as they do in some manual transmissions however, but they probably do.
If you attempted to hit reverse at 30mph, yes it could have bent the shift fork if you were forcing it in against its resistance to enter the gear, however it is more likely you broke off all the dog teeth on the reverse ring gear and wore the crap out of the synchro.
So, the procedure you are using to enter reverse may work for awhile, but keep in mind it is using the reverse gear outside of its normal range, so the wear will be exaggerated and you may loose reverse. But, its not gone until its gone, so unless you have some $$ burning a hole in your pocket, don't worry about it until it doesn't go in. You will likely only loose reverse and still have most forward gears.
This problem will not make the entire transmission fail...just reverse and whatever other gear it shares the fork with. Unfortunately to correct reverse you have to take apart the entire transmission. For a good schematic of manual transmission function visit http://www.howthingswork.com and look up manual tranny's in the automotive section. They have animations and everything so you can understand what is happening there.
Hope this helps,
Nick
