I own a 1995 Saab 900SE that has 99,000 miles and an interference V-6 engine. The timing belt has been replaced regularly and was due for another replacement within at 100,000 miles. The other day the car lost acceleration on the highway and I had to let it drift to the side. I've since learned that the tensioner seized, taking with it the timing belt. This, of course, is a major problem and has, apparently, taken the engine out as well. I'm told that the repair bill will be $8,000-$10,000.

The dealer where I originally bought the car is out of business. Another dealer took over maintenance about eight months ago. I was told that the dealer believes I should be completely responsible for the repair bill because the car is out of warranty and because the tensioner caused the timing belt to shred; that is, the timing belt itself wasn't the problem, according to the dealer.

I intend to ask the dealer to go to the manufacturer and ask for its support. As I say, the timing belt was supposed to be replaced very soon. I bought the car to last 200,000 miles, not 100,000, and have maintained it accordingly. Saab has had problems with the V-6 engine of the generation of my car. The timing belt should not have gone, despite the dealer blaming the problem on "wear and tear."

I'd be interested in any similar problems that Saab owners have experienced, and to learn of how you handled them.
