Behind the right hand side rear passenger seat you will discover a red lever. Drop the rear seat back and you will see a 6" slit in the material separating the trunk compartment from the interior. If you reach thru the slit you can reach the handle. This disengages the motor from the gear mechanism and allows you to manually raise/lower the roof.
I had problems (96 900 SETC w. 61k miles) with the motor correctly engaging the lift gears. Wasn't meshing properly so I had a nasty grinding sound, the top moved very jerkily (sp?) and stalled.
Following some tips from the board I insured that the motor and gears engaged completely by using a 3" hose clamp (about $1.35).
Had to remove trunk liner and then sorta work the clamp around the motor and gear assembly. Tightened clamp down and the top has worked perfectly. 50-60 cycles with no problems. However, this does disable the 'red lever' behind the passenger seat.
Need more info email me.
