The ATF sounds like a good idea. Even if the miles are low, you have a lot of time on that vehicle. Switching to a synthetic base ATF or ???
I was using Mobil 1 10w30 and I switched to Delvac One (5w40), Mobil's full synthetic diesel oil, which I have on hand for a 79 Passat TDI.
My engine is much quieter and smoother with this oil! I had expected my mpg's to go down with the w40, but my mileage has never been better.
The w40 will protect the cams and lifters in situations where w30's do show wear. So thats good enough for me. And with the 4 bangers with chain and sprocket failures, perhaps a higher strength lubicant is needed there too. For most of my engines life I had been using synthetic oils, mostly castrol FakeTec (tm), which is a group III lub oil, highly hydrocracked, not a true syntheic base stock. The Mobil products are true synthetics. In Europe, there is a distiction between such products, but in North America, group III and group IV oils can both be called fully synthetic, which is really bogus.
So give the 5W40 a try, I think that you will be quite pleased. Do report your impressions.
