Serp. Belt noise saga

My 95 900S (w72k) started making a bearing noise two weeks ago in the area of the serp. belt. I assumed it was a tensioner or pully and brought it in to my local ind. for diagnosis and repair. First diagnosis (using a long screw driver as a stethiscope) was an idler pulley. He ended up replacing two pulleys that day. When I arrived to pick up the car they were just finishing, started the car, noise is still there. Next diagnosis is a bad tensioner pulley, which had to be ordered. Part finally arrives yesterday and after replacement the noise is still there. Now he tells me it is the alternator bearings and I need a new alternator.
How hard is it to diagnose this type of noise? Is it typical to just replace all the parts connected to the serp belt until you find the right one? I wouldn't be surprised if he calls this afternoon and tells me it's not the alternator, it's the water pump or the crank pulley. He even told me it may be the timing chain, I asked if he ran the engine w/o the belt to check for the noise, which he then did and guess what no noise!
Needless to say my confidence in this shop is now gone. He is not offering to remove all the needlessly replaced parts or discount the labor etc. He stated that all these parts were bad or going bad(just didn't correct the problem). He has been working on both my vehicles for 5 years and is a customer of my wife. However the techs. in his shop are all new (i.e young, in traing) and I am definately considering taking my business elsewhere.
