The idler pulleys typically dont last too long in these cars, chalk this one up to preventive maintenance, I hope they replaced the belt too. Of course this is assuming you haven't had any of this done in awhile (40-50k or so). They are doing you a favor if this is the case. On the other hand if you just had this done they are boning you.
It is also common for the alternator bearings to go out. It should not be expensive to remedy this. They should have done a better diagnostic job, but in all fairness, all of these things sound similar when near failure and they are all in the same general area under the hood. Believe me, you don't want any of this stuff to fail on you out on the road. It would be a real pain. Since he got your hopes up with the initial repair, maybe you can shame him into a little discount.
