Owners manual for the 1994-1998 Saab 900 says the preferred oil weight for the USA is 10W-30, or in colder climates 5W-30 (but the 5W-30 must be at least semi-synthetic). The owners manual also recommends oil and filter changes every 10,000 miles. Unless the vehicle is driven in city traffic, cold weather, dirty conditions, etc. then change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles.
In real life, synthetic oil prevents many wear and oil temperature related related problems. The closest thing to a consensus on the BB is to use 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 synthetic oil (Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Redline are good) and a good brand of filter (A/C Delco Ultraguard Gold, Mobil 1, and Purolator are good), changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles (or 10,000 miles if you drive mainly freeway miles).
The Saab 9-3 which uses basically the same engine as the 1994-1998 Saab 900 says to use 5W-30 oil (minimum semi-synthetic) or 0W-40 synthetic oil. Recommended oil changes are the same as the NG900.
If you are a high performance type driver the MObil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil now being offered in the USA (long offered in Europe) is a great oil for the Saab turbo engine.
At least that is my opinion on the subject.
