Saab does not require synthetic oil. However, based on 25 years of using AMSOIL in Saabs, I wouldn't consider running a turbo on anything but synthetic.
Mercedes recently put out a TSB instructing the dealers to use synthetic oil in the more powerful engines during the 10K oil services. They got tired of buying engines.
Some dealers may offer synthetic oils at service, but few (if any) will use synthetics as standard. They generally purchase their oil in bulk from the lowest bidder (or the company with the best perks).
Synthetics have been available for 30 years now, and have proven themselves far superior to the non-synthetics. Reduced wear, better protection, cooler running, faster winter starts, increased horsepower and/or better fuel economy, extended drain intervals (or at least the capability of safely going the European recommended drain intervals, which are usually based on oils which meet the more stringent European oil specs.
