Search the NG 900 board for "balance shafts". Someone a while back posted a link to a page that gives a VERY in-depth look at the purpose of balance shafts, and whether or not they're needed in every type of engine. Basically, a 4-cylinder engine is not a balanced design like a V-6 or a V-8. Above 2 liters, they tend to produce a lot of vibrations. As far as I know, Honda is the only company that has managed to make a 4-cylinder production engine over 2 liters that doesn't need balance shafts. It's in the new CR-V. Every other 4-cylinder engine that's 2 liters or bigger, and a lot of smaller engines, use balance shafts.
