· Bought 900 in Dec 2000 with 42,000 miles… had 45,000 mile service check…
· Replaced alternator in July ’01 with 55,000 miles…
· Had Check Engine Light and rough running in Aug ’01 with 56,500 miles… Invoice says: Code P0442- Small E/Vap Leak Trac and Repair Vacum Leak at Charcoal Cannister…
· On 9/11 am with 58,500 miles, engine suddenly starts to stall after filling up with gas… drive home 20 miles on freeway… have to put car in neutral while driving to restart… car stalls at least 10 times on drive home, but each time am able to restart… I take 900 to local Exxon… they put it on computer check and found random misfire codes…
· I drive home a few miles and a few hours later refuses to start… Engine will crank, but not engage… I have it towed to Momentum Saab in Houston…
· They tested various components of the ignition system including replacing the ignition switch… Exchanged DI cassette… Main Fuel Pump Relay… Relay for DME system… Fuel Pressure Guage… Fuel Pump checked out OK… DME Control Unit swapped and checked as good… The Service Manager, Don Fowler, throws up his hands while I am there and says, “It has some relation to heat!”… He can’t figure it out…
· It is now 9/24 and I have the 900 towed to an independent master mechanic specializing on European cars… He replaces crank sensor… Both O2 sensors… After extensive diagnostic efforts, he says that he noticed that the metal connector plate behind the tach got so hot that he couldn’t touch it… He disconnected the instrument panel and the car started up and ran immediately and stayed running… He said he tried to just disconnect the tach, but that this was mot possible… He said that this hot connection was shutting down the computer-on-board, or otherwise causing the computer to give false misfire and other signals…
· He bought a used instrument panel from a California Spare Parts Dealer for $300… installed it and the 900 has been running fine for the last 7 months until 2 weeks ago… Then the same stalling characteristics as before reared their ugly head…
· Now you ask why did I first not take the Saab back to the Independent when it failed again… Well, he apparently fixed it but it cost about $2,000 and almost 2 months in the shop…
· Anyway, I had the 900 towed back to Performance Saab… the successor to Momentum Saab in Houston and hopefully more knowledgeable… They have had it for 2 weeks … Invoice (with misspellings for accuracy) reads as follows: “Towed in – Owner says in heat of day, engine will die at idle and driving. Will crank – Checked for Codes in Trionic No Codes Checked Operation of Crankshaft Sensor OK. Test Drove – Check Engine Light Came On Code P01171 - O2 Sensor No Signal. Checked with Tech Two No Reading 0V. Checked Trionic Conector Loose Brocken Locks for Conector - Secured Conector Test Drove O2 Sensor Operating to Specs Car Did Not Die. Had Advisor Drive Car Operating Fine.”
· Total Bullshit… I picked it up drove it for 50 miles and it is now stuck in my driveway….
