If the toe in is off, the steering can feel real strange and vague, even when everything else is otherwise in good shape.
The upper mounts can be the source of such problems as well. Hood up, engine off, wheels straight ahead. Watch the strut top shaft, and move the steering wheel to the point where the tires want to start to scrub on the pavement. So you are not turning the wheel very far. Now work the steering wheel back and forth watching the strut shafts. There should be no gross movement. If you see things squirming around, you need new mounts. Yes that means pulling the struts and removing the springs all over again. If these mounts have 110000 miles, they are getting near end of life. For many they don't last nearly so long.
You can get an asistant doing the wheel thing and you can remove the throttle body cover and watch the steering rack and look for gross movement of the rack at the firewall.
