According to Saab, the problem with inverting the DI is that the oil in the coils won't be in the right spot when it's energized. I don't know if this immediately damages it, or if you're safe for a few cranks, this is just the 'why' that Saab gives. I think grounding it is a safety thing, these coils make something like 40,000 volts apiece -- and I guess if you're not 'supposed to' turn it over, you might arc to all the metal bits you'd be holding it over.
Give it a sniff -- Often, DIs that die suddenly will smell noticeably of acrid, burned electronics. You can also swap with a friend/co-worker for a test crank; any DI from an NG900/9-3/9-5 or later 9000 will work for this test. (Early DI-equipped 9000s may have a different connector.)
