The actual way to replace the antenna is as follows:

1. loosen the nut on the outside of the antenna
2. turn the radio on
3. pull the old antenna out through the hole
4. (you will need a second person to accomplish this) start the new antenna through the hole by inserting the plastic toothed part down until it bottoms and then having the other person turn the radio off so that the motor pulls the antenna in, make sure you guide it straight down so it does not catch anything
5. once the entire antenna is drawn in you just need to retighten the nut

I think you may be able to try this in your situation. I hope it works. Otherwise I may not be able to help you much.
