Craig,
If I'm not mistaken, Dyno oil is just a reference to regular (made from Dynosaurs) oil, vs. Synth.. :)
I too suffer from a noise under the bonnet or hood.. I was hoping to make a happy post stating that I was a new owner of a 95 900 SE, and honestly for the most part I am. However, I have replaced both pulleys and the serpentine belt and I'm still hearing a loud clacking noise from the engine. In fact, thanks to the massive amounts of information from Dean and others here, I was able to pull the belt, and swap the pulley w/o ever having really worked on cars before. Thanks guys!
With the belt off, I ran the engine for about 90 seconds, and to my dismay there was still this chain rattling sound, I put my ear up to the head of the engine, on the side of the serpentine belt and I could hear it so clearly, I wanted to take the valve cover off and take a peek.. However, I figured it was time to walk away and do some more research. (not to mention I have no idea what I'm looking for/at)
I did find a local independant Saab place very close to my home, and he said that it would be about 2,000 US to do the timing chain kind of service. Something about 1,000 in labor and another 1,000 in parts. I was told the engine had to be dropped from the car, and the work performed and then the engine installed back in the car <sigh> is this typical?
Also, lets say that this IS the procedure that I must pay for.. What else can I/should I have done to the engine while its out? Any Seals or gaskets that might as well get replaced at 137K? These may be included in the 1K of parts, who knows..
I'm also toying with the possibility of running synthetic (currently dyno) and the prospect of it being turned into a performance car in the future. I will let nothing short of a bus stop me from turning this car into a high performance machine, however I will do nothing until the car is brought back to spec..
Oh, just as a little background, the car belonged to a man who had 9 cars and 12 kids in Detroit. It has 137K miles on it, and I'm doubtful that it had the oil changed quite as religiously as it should have. So after driving it to Northern Virginia from Detroit, I had the engine flushed and the oil changed, and it is now running a K&N Drop in..
Sorry if I rambled, its my first post after spending a month reading and learning TONS from you all..
thanks,
Karlo
