Ok, sorry for the double Post but things have gotten ever so much more interesting.
To recap: New owner of 95 900 SE turbo, 137K miles. Previous owner not the most meticulous (sp?) about maintenance.
Problem: Most likely timing chain and/or chain tensioner. (I hope) Already tried taking off the serpentine belt and rattling chain noise is still coming from the passenger side of the top of the head.
Ok, so after doing some more reading here, and going over the Haynes manual over and over again, I have decided to go ahead and attempt to dissasemble my car to the point where I can get the timing cover off, and replace the timing chain and tensioner and any other parts that look suspect.
I'm going on faith that the Haynes manual is correct in saying that this procedure can be performed w/ the engine still in the car, even though they show it all w/ the engine. This is done for easy reference I'm sure, and also so they don't have to tell u where to get the magic torx bit tool that is only 1 cm wide.. (mutter)
First off, has anyone here done this on a 900SE turbo? The posts I found talked about the V6 but I didn't find any for my 4 cylinder.
Second, after removing the valve cover, I got my first glimpse at the cam gears. It seems that they are worn in a rather odd manner, and I am hoping someone has seen this before. If you are looking at the side of the gears, BOTH gears have wear marks at the bottom of the "U" made by looking at the area between the teeth. So, to explain it in a different way, the tips of the teeth are thicker than the valleys of the gears.
Now for the REALLY weird part.. the wear is only on every OTHER valley. So, one "U" is fine, and the other is worn.. and its the same staggered wear on both gears.. one valley good one valley worn. Does this indicate a tensioner problem? Is my chain also worn? It does seem to have a lot of play from side to side on the area of the chain between the gears that I can wiggle.. And I'm guessing I'll need new cam gears too, any trick to this?
If someone can help me I would really appreciate it, I promise to keep my newbie questions down to a minimum and read as much as I can before asking. This is my first time ever doing something like this but I really think I can pull it off (pardon my terrible pun). Also it would be great if I could save $2K (that I don't have).
Thanks all!
Karlo
