I bought a 96 900SE almost three years ago. It was off a lease and had 48,000 miles. Today, the car has 79,000 miles. Overall, I am happy with it. It has rarely had anything break, and has been very affordable to run. I do my own maintenance.
Here is what I have experienced:
A transmission seal began leaking shortly after I bought the car. Fortunately, it was covered under warranty. The transmission had to be removed to fix the fault seal. Cost would have been close to $1,000.
The DI cassette went bad around 65,000 miles. Replaced myself. Part cost $350.
The clutch has been the weakest part. The clutch cable has had to be replaced twice ($125 each time at dealer.) Once, the clutch needed a larger repair (I forget what was wrong, cost was around $600.)
The cruise control is also poblematic. Has been fixed twice, once under warranty and once out of warranty. It is broken again.
Everything else has been solid. Hope this helps.
