Installed the Kicker RMB6 midbass drivers in my 97 900SET's doors this afternoon. Also, please see my posts about one month ago (in the General Bulletin board) about my installation of the Infinity 32.5cf dash speakers.
I upgraded the existing 6.5 inch poly speakers with the Kickers with hopes of improving the quality/tightening up the bass a little bit. The kickers are very good quality with a nice basket and large magnet about 50% heavier than the stock driver's. I used the existing stock outboard amplifier and the sound is definitely better but only slightly better than stock...more defined bass/less boomy....however they will need more power to reach their potential.
The existing stock speaker's bass output is actually quite decent and therefore I would recommend AGAINST upgrading the stock 6.5" drivers (unless you upgrade the stock amplifier) b/c the improvement is marginal. At least I am confident that the RMB6 will last much longer due to the high quality construction and should I decide to upgrade the amplifier its one less step.
My other upgrade is the Infinity 32.5cf in the dash board location and that upgrade worth every penny!
Installation Details:
Thanks to this bulletin board and Haynes I was able to remove the door panels in about 5 minutes each! The speaker is screwed onto a plastic basket/bracket that is also screwed onto the sheet metal. I had to drill two large holes in the plastic basket to accomodate the Kicker's large speaker terminals and remove some the plastic on the top so the drivers could seat properly. The most difficult part of the job was putting the door panel back and making sure the plastic clips lined up with the door panel. Total time: 45 minutes.
